11 Best Moments in Cleveland Sports

1,) Cavaliers winning championship in 2016
More than a half-century in the making, it’s hard to argue that anything else should go here.

2.) Indians’ World Series victory in 1948
Thanks to the Cubs, we now have the longest streak in MLB without a World Series ring, so all we can do is long for 1948.

3.) Rajai Davis’ homerun in Game 7 of 2016
This is not a joke, East 4th Street was literally shaking when Rajai pulled this one down the line.

4.) 1964 Cleveland Browns Championship
Underdogs to the Baltimore Colts,  this was the Browns’ last championship, and just a few years before the Super Bowl started. It was also the last time the city won a championship at home.

5.) Drafting of Lebron James in 2003
How many other athletes have changed the course of an entire franchise like James has done with the Cavs? Twice?

6.) James’  Game 5 performance against Pistons in 2007 Eastern Conference Finals
This was back in the day when people all over the country liked Lebron. I was in a bar in St. Louis and it felt like I was in Cleveland. 29 of the Cavs’ final 30 points in Detroit.

7.) 1920 Indians World Series winners
The only time Cleveland has won a World Series at home–in the old League Park (which you should visit today).

8.) Browns win 1950 championship in first year in NFL
This was the Browns’ first season in the NFL. And what did they do? They won the darn league.

9.) Cleveland’s own Jesse Owens at 1936 Olympics
A black man from Cleveland went to Berlin during the Nazi era and with 4 gold medals, showed them what they could do with white supremacy.

10.) Miracle of Richfield in 1976
Long before the Cavs started playing downtown, a franchise that had been in existence for only 6 seasons made a stirring run to its first postseason before losing in the 2nd round of the playoffs to the Celtics.

11.) Browns’ drafting Bernie Kosar in 1985
The way Kosar, the Youngstown native, manipulated the rules of the NFL draft are enough to endear him to any Clevelander. The way he played for us after that, leaves a special place in the heart of Cleveland sports fans for #19.
